Our Location

Map of Avenal, CA 93204, US

Avenal California is located in Kings County, five miles west of Interstate 5, at the intersection of State Route 33 and State Route 269. We are about half way between Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay area on the west side of the Central Valley. Avenal has a varied combination of lift conditions including thermal, mountain wave, ridge and convergence most of the year.

Mid-December through Mid-February occasion fog is present but soaring is great after the frequent frontal passages that occur at this time of year. Some call Avenal a "Mini Minden". Many long cross country flights have been made from Avenal including John Shelton's two diamond flights. In addition, last year's altitude gain in a mountain wave just 5 miles southwest of the field was 17,999 msl! In 2011, Morgan Hall flew from Avenal south around the Grapevine and up to Bishop, CA, in one continuous flight.

We have two runways, Rwy 30/12, about 3,200 ft. long and 300 ft. wide, and Rwy 08/26, about 2,400 ft. long and 200 ft. wide. They are primarily grass with some dirt patches.

The city of Avenal is just across Hwy 33 east of the field, while flat farmland borders the field on the south, west and north. We use and monitor 123.3 both for field operations and in the air, glider-to-glider or glider-to-ground.

This is a dedicated gliderport owned by a group of glider pilots / enthusiasts who intend it to be for soaring as it's principal use. It is shown as a restricted airport on both the San Francisco and Los Angeles sectionals. Transient powered aircraft are not allowed.
